One thing I have noticed while doing scat music is that it can be really hard getting young people to listed to real jazz music. They want hip hop, rock, R’n'B and all those kinds of music.
The main problem seems to be that they don’t understand jazz music properly, they hear the various instruments but not the sound and feeling behind it. I have tried to slowly introduce the young people for jazz with my new album solcelleanlæg.

Solcelleanlæg starts out with some more popular and mainstream beats inspired by rythm and blues with a twist of pop and then slowly works in more and more jazz music. I have been playing Solcelleanlæg for a few youngsters now and to be begin with they prefered the songs in the beginning of Solcelleanlæg but as they listened more and more it, most of them actually seemed to end up liking the jazz songs at the end the best especially the song at the end which caries the same title as the album Solcelleanlæg or the number before that called Solfanger like the ones described here at Solfanger.

What makes Solcelleanlæg and Solfanger so different from regular jazz music and scat music is that combine different types of music like jazz, R’n'B and pop music in a perfect way, the first few times you listen to it you most likely won’t enjoy it very much but after a few times its one of these songs you can enjoy over and over for years.

The song Solcelleanlæg is a basic love song about a girl who meets a boy at the market, falls in love at first sight and then spends the next few hours trying to get him to notice her instead of checking out all the other girls with his friends.

Many of the other songs on the album are also about love but the one Solfanger is a bit different, it’s about this old man who are trying very hard to get some of his music published, he has been writing and playing music for years and are very talented but never managed to get anywhere with it.
Then one day this rich guys who’s wife just passed away comes by while he is sitting on the street playing, and instantly takes a liking to the music and wants to invest in the musician and help getting his songs recorded and published.

But a lot of the stuff is basicly about love and to experiment a bit with different types of music, something I really enjoy as I like many others hate to put music in fixed boxes. But the main purpose with solcelleanlæg is to make more people interested in jazz music and show them that it can be a great form for music and something really worth listening to if you take the time to learn it a little bit better.

New stuff in 2011

Hello my friends, It’s been a while since I last posted any updates here for which I apologize, but I have been out traveling with my wife for the last 2 months, seeing some of the world. We took started out in Australia, then New Zealand, a few weeks in india and ended the trip in thailand. It was an amazing trip, a lot of good inspiration to my music as each country had their very own style of scat and we got some meet a lot of really nice and cool people, learning a lot about the different cultures and seeing things I didn’t belived possible just 2 months ago.

Now it’s back to the studio to play with some new ideas I got while traveling, I am going to try to mix some of the music from the east with some of my classic jazz and see what kind of interesting results I can come up with.
Hopefully the final result will be something new and intersting which we haven’t heard before here in the US and hopefully people will find it exciting and want to hear more of this kind. One thing is for sure, it will be very fun to make and I am going to enjoy it a lot no matter what the outcome will be.

Beside from that I will be spending most of 2011 on some house improvements, improving my recording studio some too and during the spring play a few gigs in town which some of my good friends.
At the fall we will be taking a trip to New York to play a few minor gigs there and maybe by then I will be able to play some of my new stuff and see what people in New York feels about such things. I am really looking forward to it.

Scat singing

A lot of you have been wondering what scatsinging really is and according to wikipedia it’s defined as a vocal improvisation with wordless vocables, nonsense syllables or without words at all, which pretty much defines a lot of my music.
While it’s improvised, the melodic lines are very often variations on arpeggio and scale fragments, riffs andstock patterns which in this case is with instrumental improvisers.
Not all of my music would be characterised as scat, a lot of is is closer to original new orleans jazz with a touch of blues, which I play either by myself or sometimes with my band depending on what I feel like doing.
This weekend I have mainly been sitting down in my basement with a bottle of Jack and just experimenting with new sounds and styles, nothing worth recording by it helped improve my skills and gave me some good ideas for some further projects I might be doing with my band. That is the beauty of music, you can just go with it and play as you want, trying new things and changing the sounds to fit your own mood. The saxophone and guitar are great tools for this, it’s a bit harder with the piano for some reason. Tonight i’ll take the wife our for a nice dinner, she haven’t seen much of me during the weekend so she deservers a little attention too, she is the most amazing wife you can imagine, beautiful, loving and best of all very patient.

Hi’ Guys and girls, I do appologize for the lack of updates lately. We have just moved back to Lousiana after our stay in California so I haven’t had any time to get online. Didn’t have any time for my hobbies either, as it took quite a while to make the new placed suited for living. It really was a mess when we got it, but it does have a lot of soul and potential. In a few years and with a little more work I know it will be one of the best places we have lived so far. Anyway, now that I am finally online again, I should have a little more time to make this page work again and write a few posts more often. Luckily most of the work on the house are stuff my wife can easily do, most of the hard work are finished except for a few things I am unable do to myself and has hired people to help me out with like the new celler for the garage and the ornated steel balcany.

New place in town

A cool new place just opened here in town. It’s called Murphy’s place and is a small smoked filled bar down at the 5th. near Sam’s.
It may not look at much at first glince but once you walk in and notice the atmosphere, start talking with some of the locals you will notice how great a place this is. Live music several days a week with both local bands and a few from across the sea too. I have been there three times now since they opened and it’s fast becomming one of my very favorite places.
Heck maybe me and Pete will try give a gig there at some point, would the perfect place to play. It wouldn’t matter if the pay is low and it doesn’t have the best surroundings for perfect sound it will be a great place to play anyway. Should we be playing there anytime soon, i’ll add a post here so those of you who want to come and see us will have a chance for that too. It is one of the best places in town for those who are into jazz music and swing.

2010 jazz festival jam

In the spirit of good old freddie I resampled a few of his old song for the upcomming jazz festival. You can find them on youtube under my regular profile there. I will be attending the show with my friend Pete and we will be playing a few of our own scat versions of these old classic wonders. To spice things up a little we have added some samples from and old german porn movie in one of the tracks, that should be enough to get some of the old classic people a little upset and bring a little more fun into this type of music. All in all we are pretty much ready for the event now and are really looking forward to it. Hopefully it will be as much fun as the one we were attending 3 years ago, it
‘s really something playing for a crowd of 10.000 people when you are used to play in a small bar with maybe 40-60 guests. Normally I would prefer the last as it’s often more cozy but it’s really nice to try something this big now and then. So we are just honored we got the chance to come and play our stuff.

A good friend of mine, mr. James Inigco dropped by yesterday and helped me out with some of the vocals on the last track. That guy truely knows what he is doing and got some of the best vocals ever for this kind of scat. We spend all afternoon and most of the evening recording, We even did some crazy cover numbers of a few good Jimmy songs. Now I just need to edit and cut of some of the extra stuff we did while we all still fondly remembers a legend.

First new song ready and it’s sounding great so far. About to start on the next few tracks and within a month the entire album should ready for a preview. It’s really some of the best scat I have made so far. Getting some great vocal help from miss Janie on some of the songs.

Room has finally been cleaned and we are slow moving the instruments back into it. So soon the sound of sweet scat music will one again fill the studio and we can all get back to recording again.
Best part is the insurance covered everything so with a little extra money the place will be even better than before.

Delay on the new scat sound

Had a little setback with my scat music, due to some very heavy raining my recording studio in the basement was flooded and there’s a lot of water damage there. The toilet in the basement ran over due to the rain so it’s shit and water everywhere down there. so fixing that up first before I can go on recording the new songs. should take a few more weeks to get the water removed, and replace the damaged part of the floor and furniture.
